چکیده

We examine the existence of stable bound states of some diatomic molecular ions where the neutral molecule itself is either unbound or barely bound. Two bound states have been found for the HeH ion even though HeH is known to be unbound. We have found no bound states for He2 2 even though He2 is known to have one bound state. The predicted binding energies for HeH are of the order of 1 K and depend sensitively on the isotope combinations. Other weakly bound negative ions such as NeH and ArH have also been investigated. These weakly bound molecular ions are good candidates for cold collision experiments. @S1050-2947~99!01509-7#

Rotational structure of weakly bound molecular ions

Relying on the quantization rule of Raab and Friedrich [Phys. Rev. A (2009) in press], we derive simple and accurate formulae for the number of rotational states supported by a weakly bound vibrational level of a diatomic molecular ion. We also provide analytic estimates of the rotational constants of any such levels up to threshold for dissociation and obtain a criterion for determining whethe...

Control of Optical Transitions with Magnetic Fields in Weakly Bound Molecules.

In weakly bound diatomic molecules, energy levels are closely spaced and thus more susceptible to mixing by magnetic fields than in the constituent atoms. We use this effect to control the strengths of forbidden optical transitions in (88)Sr2 over 5 orders of magnitude with modest fields by taking advantage of the intercombination-line threshold. The physics behind this remarkable tunability is...

Spectral Module for Photon Monte Carlo Calculations in Hypersonic Nonequilibrium Radiation

In this paper, efficient spectral modules and random number databases are developed for atomic and diatomic species for use in photon Monte Carlo (PMC) modeling of hypersonic nonequilibrium flow radiation. To model nonequilibrium flow conditions, the quasisteady state assumption was used to generate electronic state populations of atomic and diatomic gas species in the databases. For atomic spe...

Electron Impact Detachment of Weakly Bound Negative Ions

A method is presented for accurately calculating the total electron impact detachment cross section for weakly bound negative ions. The results are compared to recent experiments for electron impact detachment of H and B. Cross sections differential in energy are presented which elucidate some of the dynamics of the detachment process. A scaling law for the cross section is proposed. [S0031-900...

Electron-impact ionization of diatomic molecules using a configuration-average distorted-wave method

Electron-impact ionization cross sections for diatomic molecules are calculated in a configuration-average distorted-wave method. Core bound orbitals for the molecular ion are calculated using a single-configuration self-consistent-field method based on a linear combination of Slater-type orbitals. The core bound orbitals are then transformed onto a two-dimensional r , numerical lattice from wh...
